The Position
We are looking for a Research & Policy Officer to support our research on migration policies, practices, and narratives. In this role, you’ll be a key contributor to the development of Second Tree’s model, working on the ground and external training.
Our research is informed by our on-the-ground work. You will help translate some of our discussions and practices into conceptual narratives that link research and practice. To do this successfully, you’ll need to employ meticulous organisational skills, have strong attention to detail, and critical and analytical skills.
The research carried out in this role is interdisciplinary, and we welcome candidates from any academic or professional background. What we value most is a genuine interest in the topics we work on and the work that we do, motivation to learn, and a commitment to thoughtful, rigorous research that can meaningfully inform practice.
The Role Will Include:
- Researching and collecting data on topics related to migration, othering, trust and community-building.
- Summarising relevant research and suggesting how to best incorporate it into our existing model
- Supporting the preparation for Second Tree’s attendance at academic conferences and external events, contributing to academic publications, and translating research into accessible formats for different audiences.
- Contributing to the collection, organisation, and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data.
- Supporting the continuous assessment and improvement of Second Tree’s Monitoring & Evaluation processes in our different programmes and trainings.
- Communicating with academics and external partners.
You should be able to:
- Professionally communicate in English (verbally and in writing)
- Conduct thorough, high-quality, independent research
- Employ critical analytical skills to conduct thorough, high-quality, independent research.
- Read, interpret and summarise research through qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
- Work to deadlines with flexibility and a problem-solving attitude.
- Work both independently and collaboratively across teams and projects.
- Manage and prioritise projects effectively to meet team and proposal deadlines.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience with policy and research writing.
- An interest in the research and exploration of concepts related to migration, trust, and community-building.
- Experience with Monitoring and Evaluation practices.
What We Offer:
- A nurturing and collaborative working environment. We work hard to help our volunteers grow; investing in personal and professional development.
- The opportunity to connect academic research with practical fieldwork and influence programme design.
- Accommodation in a shared house
- Transportation to/from work
- After completion of a three-month trial, if you commit long-term, a small monthly expenses refund
In certain periods of the year, demand is extremely high, and the shared houses might be full. If you have the means to pay for your own accommodation, please let us know. We would still be happy to host you if space is available. However, in a situation where the shared houses are full, this would allow us to offer an opportunity to someone who cannot afford to pay rent.
