Project Description

Since March 2017 we have run several cycles of the Twinning project to facilitate the integration of refugees and asylum seekers into local society.

How do we do that? We match refugee families (targeting those who have received refugee or asylum status in Greece) with members of the local community to foster long-lasting relationships that can make a positive difference in the lives of the individuals and their community.

Every refugee family is “twinned” with a local family and they take part in a variety of activities such as job integration workshops, cultural visits and social events. For both locals and refugees, the project provides a broadening of social networks and cultural boundaries, and lessens the threat of isolation. Through these encounters we help newcomers adjust faster to their new community, and give Greeks the opportunity to learn about the refugee situation, creating a more welcoming society.

The friendships developed during the project continue beyond its boundaries, as twinned families see each other in their spare time! As language plays an important part in friendships, a criteria for participation is attendance in the Second Tree English Language Program or in Greek classes delivered by the University of Ioannina.

To create long-term success, integration projects such as the Twinning require steady reinforcement through meaningful activities.

How can you help? We can use your support in many ways: have you worked on a similar project? Would you, your friends, your school or workplace like to be involved? If you have insights to share or skills to donate, get in touch at
